Has bipolar disorder been controlling your life?
You are not alone. In 2020, 54,712 people in Ohio were diagnosed with bipolar disorder. SUN Behavioral Health Columbus solves unmet needs by offering bipolar disorder (BPD) treatment. Sometimes, bipolar disorder can result in a mental health crisis. You shouldn’t have to wait for help when a crisis comes, which is why we offer crisis care with 24/7 admission.
You are not alone when it comes to experiencing bipolar disorder or its associated symptoms. Many people are known to experience this mental health disorder, and they can find treatment for it that works for them. However, what does it mean when someone is diagnosed with bipolar disorder?
Bipolar disorder is when someone experiences shifts in mood, activity levels, concentration, and energy, which can result in the person experiencing challenges when they are trying to complete their daily tasks. These shifts refer to episodes called mania and depression. Mania is a period when people feel “up.” They experience symptoms of elation, irritability, and energy. However, people with bipolar disorder will also experience periods where they feel “down” and have symptoms of sadness, indifference, and hopelessness. This period is known as depression. Below are two of the most common types of bipolar disorder someone might be diagnosed with.
This type of bipolar disorder involves having manic episodes for a minimum of 7 days or having manic symptoms that are severe enough that they require medical care. Depression episodes will last a minimum of 2 weeks. People who have this type of bipolar disorder may have 4 or more episodes of mania or depression in a 1-year time frame, known as “rapid cycling.”
Bipolar II is similar to bipolar I as it is a pattern of episodes; however, this disorder goes between episodes of depression and hypomania. Hypomania episodes include less severe symptoms of mania.
CBT is one of the most effective treatments for mental health conditions, and it’s effective for anger management, too.
Through CBT, you’ll learn to challenge irrational thought patterns and behavior. You’ll better understand where others are coming from, and start putting your anger in the proper context. Skills you develop through CBT will also enable you to solve problems instead of letting anger cloud your judgment and will teach you how to relax and calm down. You’ll also pinpoint your anger triggers, and practice ways to react more reasonably next time you encounter one.
First and foremost, we look at your medical history and then perform specialized assessments to determine the correct diagnosis. Once BPD is confirmed, our team will work with you to determine the best treatment plan for your situation.
Bipolar disorder can feel frustrating and sometimes terrifying, especially when you try to manage your symptoms on your own. However, receiving treatment can help you understand your symptoms and make them more manageable daily. SUN Behavioral Health Columbus’s mental health services page describes specific treatment methods we use in the treatment of BPD. These treatment methods can be employed at any of our levels of care which include:
Our inpatient treatment provides mental health crisis stabilization for children, adolescents, and adults. The typical stay for an inpatient treatment at our facility is 7-14 days.
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is the highest level of mental health outpatient and runs from 9 AM until 2:30 PM Monday through Friday. PHP is available for both adolescents and adults. Our daytime intensive outpatient (IOP) is available Monday through Friday for 3 hours a day. Both adolescents and adults can participate in our IOP. We also offer an evening IOP for adults that runs for 3 hours a day, 3 evenings a week. Topics included during our outpatient programming include processing groups, goals groups, coping skills, stress, time management, and rec therapy.
Anyone can experience bipolar disorder, but the most significant risk factors include brain functioning and genetics.
Our medical professionals diagnose bipolar disorder. Your healthcare professional may complete a physical exam, order medical testing, and refer you to another mental health professional or doctor for evaluation.
The diagnostic exam will examine the severity, length, and frequency of your symptoms and experiences throughout your life.
