“A big part of depression is feeling really lonely, even if you’re in a room full of a million people.” - Lilly Singh
If you relate to this quote, you are not alone. In 2020, 126,003 people in Ohio were diagnosed with a depression disorder. At SUN Behavioral Health Columbus, we solve unmet needs by providing depression treatment. Depression may exist alongside another disorder, such as a substance use disorder or anxiety. These disorders can prevent depression symptoms from improving, which is why we can treat both disorders at the same time, enhancing your recovery.
Depression is a mood disorder, and it impacts the way someone feels, thinks, and handles everyday activities. It can impact the way someone sleeps, eats, or works. Depression impacts many people, no matter their age, ethnicity, or gender. There are several types of depression someone might be diagnosed with. These include:
According to a study done by the CDC in 2020, 22.8% of people older than 18 in Ohio were diagnosed with depression. They also found that throughout the United States in 2020, 18.4% of adults had been diagnosed with depression.
After a diagnosis or confirmation using your medical history, medical professionals will treat depression with medication, therapy, or a combination of both. Medications usually include antidepressants. Therapy frequently includes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT helps people change unhealthy thoughts and behaviors, which can help improve depression symptoms. Topics such as mindfulness can help target specific symptoms associated with depression. SUN Behavioral Health Columbus’s mental health services include many evidence-based therapies that are used throughout our complete continuum of care model.
Our inpatient treatment provides mental health crisis stabilization for children, adolescents, and adults. The typical stay is 7-14 days.
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is the highest level of mental health outpatient and runs from 9 AM until 2:30 PM Monday through Friday. PHP is available for both adolescents and adults. Our daytime intensive outpatient (IOP) is available 3 hours daily, Monday through Friday. Both adolescents and adults can participate in our IOP. We also offer an evening IOP for adults that runs for 3 hours a day, 3 evenings a week. Topics during our outpatient programming include processing groups, goals groups, coping skills, stress, time management, and rec therapy.
People who are diagnosed with depression require at least 5 symptoms of depression that exist daily for at least 2 weeks. Required symptoms include a depressed mood and a loss of interest in activities. Primary care providers, psychologists, and psychiatrists can diagnose someone with depression. They will often ask people when their symptoms began, how frequently they occur, how long symptoms last, and if they prevent them from doing their responsibilities. Having a list of your symptoms can help make the diagnosis easier.
SUN Behavioral Health Columbus’s website offers an anonymous depression survey. While this survey does not diagnose you with depression, it can give you a better understanding of the symptoms associated with depression and how they impact your life.
Depression can happen to anyone, and many factors can play a role. These factors may be genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological. People may also develop depression if other members of their family have had depression. For some people, life changes, trauma, and stress may also result in the development of depression. For others, it may be physical illnesses or taking certain medications.
